Paul Zarzyski

PS: Make no mistake about it—Maya Angelou’s poetry trumps, times 51, the work of Paul Zarzyski. I genuflect at the image of her Collected Poems in mere proximity with my book. Fact is, I immediately ordered her volume, which likely helped to bump her book back above 51, where it most certainly will forever remain. She has been my heroine ever since I heard, and watched, her deliver her masterpiece poem, “On The Pulse Of Morning,” at President Clinton’s inauguration ceremony. I’m humbled to have quoted Ms. Angelou in the closing pages to “Round 1” of my Self-Interview. However, I regret that 51 was on its way into print prior to her response as a recent recipient of the Medal Of Freedom from President Obama at the White House, where she said (my apologies for paraphrasing here): “I accept this honor on behalf of all the African people who stepped off the slave ships and onto the auction blocks.” If those poignant words do not bring tears to your eyes and compel you to bow in sorrow, I suggest you make appointments with your cardiologist, your ophthalmologist, your psychologist, and your minister.
